Is Social Media really encouraging the Freedom of Speech?
Paragraph 1
【現】The progression of technology always leads to inventions of unprecedented great high-techs, like the emergence of social media platforms in recent years. The social media platforms, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, or Youtube, (7+3畫解:如何舉例(廣東話按此)(普通話按此))blends telecommunication, social interaction, and content-sharing media where people interact to communicate through pictures, films, videos, words, and music. Social media seems to enhance our freedom of speech over and above what normally might be expected.(7+3畫解:句型與prep.(廣東話按此)(普通話按此))
Paragraph 2
【表】However, the story is not in this direction. I believe the increasing popularity of using such social media will finally lead to imposing more restrictions(7+3畫解: to+Ving如何用(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)) on the freedom of speech in many societies, to a certain extent.
Paragraph 3
【理】One of the major causes is that social media can be manipulated to spread gossips and rumors easily. Most social media uses mobile and web-based technologies to turn communications into interactive dialogues. People can use social media to express feelings, give opinions, praise and rebuke vices(罪惡). Therefore, anyone with a social media account can express ‘any’ opinions and feelings on matters even affecting an individual country or the whole world at large. 【現】For instance, Twitter allowed internet users to discuss and give views about the Covid-19 pandemic. But different kinds of conspiracy theories against governments without rigorous supports dominated on social media. Hence, many people who refused to surrender DNA samples to their government for the pandemic test prevailed, on the ground of ‘mistrust’ already strengthened by the gossips and rumors on social media.(7+3畫解:如何用【三種語構】組成複合句I(廣東話按此)(普通話按此))
Paragraph 4
【理】Another conspicuous factor is that social media can be used as a tool to instigate (煽動)public prejudice towards special groups of people. Some use social media to spread hate, let out their anger to abuse, etc. As a matter of fact, social media platforms have always been used to defame special groups of people, thus spoiling their public image. Misused freedom of speech on social media platforms may leave permanent damages that will remain as long as the platform is still there. (7+3畫解:如何用【三種語構】組成複合句II(廣東話按此)(普通話按此))This has made social media platform owners put policies aiming at regulating such freedom of speech. One recent incident is that of Twitter’s deleting a post made by the president of the United States(7+3畫解:poss. adj. 配Ving的用法(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)), claiming that it violated some of the platform’s policies. In reality, some governments already enacted laws that aimed to tame(馴化) excessive use of freedom of speech online.
Paragraph 5
It is undeniable that the emergence of social media exhibits and enhances the extent of freedom of speech. People can now give their opinions, make demands, express their happiness, agitation, and other emotions. But in these few years, I notice there have been many ill uses of social media platforms, thereby probably deviating from the primary purpose of why they were invented. (7+3畫解:prep. 配w-clause的用法(廣東話按此)(普通話按此)) We now often hear: ‘When expressing the freedom of speech on social media platforms, people should be accountable for what they chose to post on their respective platforms!’
Paragraph 6
【表】Although social media has been a great tool used by a significant percentage of people to ‘exhibit’ their freedom of speech, such freedom has also been abused with equal measure. My prediction is: as the ill-use of different social media prevails, more rules and legislations will be imposed to limit ‘such freedom of speech’ in our daily lives.
